We often get asked what is the best, most secure lock for your home. That’s not an easy question to answer because there are many types of homes and many reasons to protect them. We usually recommend more than one lock, especially in New York City, regardless of the borough. Bolt and chain locks are the most common types of locks we see in the home and they provide excellent protection in most cases. Chain locks can be forced open if enough force is used and bolt locks can stick from time to time. I won’t go into the many different types of locks such as cylinder locks, combination locks and cam locks. Wikipedia does a pretty good job at describing the many locks used in the city today. If you search hard enough, you’ll find all sorts of tricks for picking door locks, car locks and even some that are more complicated, but really, we’re not going to give anything away here. Why? Because it would be irresponsible for us. Regardless of the pledge we took and the oath we swore to act ethically in our profession, it’s just not responsible for locksmiths to share trade secrets. Sure, anyone can find out how to pick a lock on their own and if they have the tools, they’ll succeed with enough practice. That doesn’t mean we have to make it easy for the bad guys. There are plenty of locks available for your home that can prevent break-ins from nonprofessionals with lock-picking tools. When you’re looking to protect your home and family, however, it’s always a good idea to get the advice of a professional locksmith. It seems we talk about locksmith scams way too much. The Palm Beach Daily News just reported that the Palm Beach Police arrested a man posing as a locksmith. He was unlicensed and taking locksmith calls and referring the calls out to bidders. Some of the locksmiths would even show up and claim they were from the company that took the call. This was not the case. This kind of thing happens all the time In New York probably more than anywhere else in the country. There is a lot of money in the locksmith business because people are often vulnerable and have their guard down. They just want in, whether it’s their home or car. It’s an embarrassing situation because usually the caller locked themselves out. Many call centers have gone up claiming to be locksmiths. Some scammers set up hundreds of bogus locksmith websites and try to get them ranked in Google and other search engines. The more visibility, the more calls they get. When a call comes in, the scammer then sends it out to freelancers who do the work. Many of these freelancers are not licensed and will often damage property and bill the customer for it. In previous blog posts, we have recommended steps consumers can take when hiring a locksmith. The most important? Find a locksmith before you need one. Now is the time to research locksmith professionals. Go through Google and find one that is licensed, has good customer reviews in Yelp, Citysearch and Angie’s List. Even call them on the phone or, better yet, drive by to make sure they have a storefront. Once you find one you like, put their number in a few places you will need it if you get locked out. Answer: Before you need one. It is no secret to New Yorkers that there is a degree of sleeze among many New York locksmiths. Unfortunately, this is the nature of the business. The payoff for locksmith services is quick and lucrative. That’s because people are usually in a panic. We find that consumers will pay almost anything to get back in their home or car. People do not like feeling vulnerable, and vulnerable is exactly what they are when they’re stuck. Not all locksmiths are out for the unearned buck, however. Having been through all kinds of locking mechanisms and security devices, I have arrived at the conclusion that home protection is a thing that one needs to do themself. I’ve triple-locked my doors only to have break-ins come through the window. I’ve put bars on my windows and then have my car stolen from the driveway. And I’ve even chased off a thief from the area in the middle of the night. I never really felt safe until I bought both a gun and a dog with a deep growl and loud bark. Since self-protection is where you need to start, the logical choice would be to find yourself top of the line locking mechanisms. I know. This goes without saying, but one time I bought a cheaper version of a lock and discovered one day how cheap it actually was after having locked myself out of my apartment. I was in my bed in less than five minutes. And I didn’t even wake up the neighbors. That was pretty quick. You know the bad guys are quicker than me. I went out the next morning and upgraded to a super deadbolt. It’s easy to think the robbers are going to break down our front door and attack. But that never happens Bad guys don’t like drawing attention to themselves like that. He’s going to look for an open window or one that is easily jacked. He’ll typically slip in either when you and your family are asleep or when you’re not home. Make sure you secure those windows. Tightly secured windows are essential, but don’t try a do-it-yourself approach because you want to make sure you have a locking mechanism that will open easily in case of a fire.
